Louisiana Rural Letter Carriers to Release Open Letter Calling on Speaker Johnson and the Entire Congressional Delegation to Oppose USPS Privatization

Informational Demonstration in Baton Rouge Part of Growing Movement to Hold Elected Officials Accountable and Defend Rural Jobs and Communities

BATON ROUGE, LA — On April 27, 2025, rural letter carriers from across Louisiana will release a powerful open letter to Speaker Mike Johnson, Senator John Kennedy, Senator Bill Cassidy, and the entire Louisiana congressional delegation, urging them to cosponsor resolutions that affirm the United States Postal Service (USPS) must remain a public institution, free from privatization. The letter calls on every member of the delegation to support House Resolution 70 and Senate Resolution 147, emphasizing the vital role the Postal Service plays in Louisiana’s rural communities. The resolutions have bi-partisan support in both chambers.

The letter’s release will coincide with an informational demonstration outside a key Baton Rouge post office at the intersection of Perkins Road and Bluebonnet Boulevard, where rural carriers will engage the public about the growing threats to the Postal Service. Participants will encourage community members to visit ProtectPostalService.com to learn more about the issue and sign a petition urging elected officials to oppose privatization efforts.

Recent revelations, including a privatization scheme outlined in a Wells Fargo memo, highlight a plan to sell off the Postal Service’s most profitable operations, raise prices, and slash union jobs, jeopardizing the service millions of Americans rely on.

“This isn’t a hypothetical. Privatization is at our doorstep,” said Tameka Brown, a rural letter carrier from Baton Rouge. “If it happens, rural families, seniors, and veterans will pay the price. We’re calling on every Louisiana elected official to stand up before it’s too late.”

Currently, Rep. Troy Carter is the only Louisiana member of Congress who has signed onto the House resolution. Rural letter carriers are urging Speaker Johnson, the rest of the House delegation, and Senators Kennedy and Cassidy to join Carter in standing with their constituents against privatization.

“Momentum is growing in the House, but every member of Louisiana’s delegation has a role to play,” said Don Maston, President of the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association. “Louisiana’s leaders face a clear choice—stand with rural communities and postal workers, or let Wall Street dismantle the Postal Service for profit.”

The open letter and demonstration are part of a larger national campaign to protect the Postal Service, rural jobs, and the communities that depend on them.
